Bowery Electric, NYC, Motivation by Marilynn

It was July 2020. I had been tuning into the @Rew&WHO show online, and suddenly decided: I want a guitar. I had taken lessons when I was 10, many moons ago, and played for a few years after that. But after watching everyone perform, it called to me. So I ordered a guitar on Amazon.

It was an acoustic guitar with nylon strings, very similar to the one I learned on. Rew invited me to perform, and I started out with Tom Dooley and Mr. Tambourine Man, two songs my brother remembered me playing as a child.

But I wanted to do more. When stores opened up here in NYC, a friend met me at Guitar Center and I bought a “real” instrument: a Fender acoustic electric with steel strings. It was August, 2021 and I had never played on steel strings, never played with a pick, never used a capo. But I persevered, and was up and running pretty quickly.

I loved the reconnection! I loved singing, and discovered my voice was not a disaster but actually OK. A few weeks later, I wrote a song that embodies my philosophy, and something I try to instill in others. It’s called “Just Do It,” and it’s my signature song, released January 2022. Afraid to do what you love? Why? Just do it!

From there, I moved quickly. Once things opened up (albeit briefly that first time) in NYC, I started performing outdoors and then in venues. I love to perform and have been cast in commercials, indie films and music videos, in addition to performing in dance showcases and competitions. So, transitioning to performing as a singer/songwriter may have been easier for me than for many others. Since September 2021, I’ve performed at The Bowery Electric, Otto’s Shrunken Head, The Shrine, Silvana’s, Parkside Lounge, Stitch, and more!

Now I have a big-picture plan that includes many aspects of the music business. I’m grateful to be part of community that is incredibly creative and incredibly supportive.

Get in touch! I’m available for venue- and outdoor-based shows, fundraisers, benefits for a cause – and other projects as yet undiscovered. Email me: LarkinLooks@gmail.com
